368 Days

A Taatit bed blanket in the form of an emotional map.

This long term project is still in the beginning phases of it’s creation, manifesting slowly after 1 year spent tracking emotional and behavioural changes in relation to my menstrual cycle. It is the story of a healing journey and re-connection to self through craft, of someone seeking to understand the relationship between her emotional mind and physical body.

Replacing traditional Taatit motifs with personal data, each square of this blanket represents one day over the course of a year. Coded embroidery allows us to observe a plateau of healing, a process of letting go, and a journey towards self acceptance after trauma. It attempts to communicate the experiences of someone suffering from Pre-Menstrual Dysphoric Disorder, while considering the complexities of women’s health, and enabling bodily healing through making.

The yarn for this project has been spun and dyed by my Mother, and the 368 handwoven squares created by my Grandmother and I. This blanket is born through our intergenerational bonds and the support, love and care which exists within them.
